The chrysalis and memory

The shape of the insect chrysalis is a replica of the body form at metamorphosis, a unique individual identity. This shroud like shape is retained and represents a memory. I have used this as a basis for exploring my own memories.

Installation of ‘The Shape of Memory’ 2011 (paper, pva, Konnyaku paste, words on the gallery wall)

these feet remember hopscotch, running on hot grass and walking in a tropical rain forest
this abdomen is a memory of bearing children
and breasts carry memories of nurturing
these arms and hands have held all those I love
the head is cradled
the back is where you wrapped your arms around me
this body holds a memory of your body, skin to skin
